The purpose of this course is to learn basic communication skills. The primary focus is on listening to conversations and dialogues in a variety of situations and mastering basic vocabulary and expressions. From 2004, participants are required to participate in ‘Self-study program’ together with this course. The details are described at the bottom of the Event section.

Reading and Writing (1) (2)
In this course, students will read a lot from various genres, making a solid foundation for reading comprehension, including vocabulary building, skimming and scanning. They will also learn various skills to express their opinions through summary or opinion writing.

Paragraph-Essay Writing (1) (2)
The purpose of this course is to learn and master the concept of the paragraph as an idea unit in English passages, so to learn to write coherent English paragraphs.

The course aims to practice listening for academic purposes. The materials are mainly university lectures or discussion. Students will learn to take notes and acquire vocabulary necessary to learn in academic contexts. The class is conducted in English.
Communication Skills (4)
ジョン・ブラウン、スーザン・アダムズ、バーリット・セービン
In this course participants will have a lot of group work, discussion, making speeches and presentations. Students will learn basic skills to make a clear and persuasive speech. The class will be conducted in English, in principle, by a native speaker of English. Therefore, the students will be encouraged to speak on English.
Communication Skills (5)
ジョン・ブラウン
The purpose of this course is to discuss and brush up skills to make a better presentation. The students, therefore, will bring their own materials to demonstrate their skills. The students’ performance may be open to other people, inviting several experts from the departments. The evaluation will be made by discussion with the instructors and the participants.
Advanced Reading (1) (2)

This course is to enhance skills for reading and writing. The participants will learn to critically read essays and articles the level of which are the same as Time and Newsweek. Students should ideally have passed Reading and Writing (1) with an A or a B.
Advanced Essay Writing

The purpose of this course is to learn advanced level writing skills. The course ranges from abstracts and summary writing to short research paper writing.

This course provides a lot of reading and listening materials concerning current topics. Students will deepen the knowledge of current topics as well as vocabulary and expressions used in current news materials.
Advanced TOEIC/TOEFL (1) (2)
金澤 洋子、大谷 啓明
In this course, TOEIC and TOEFL materials are used to improve participants’ levels of English proficiency. Mainly through drills of these materials, students will be trained to get used to the test format and learn practical use of vocabulary and expressions.

This course is open to students who would like to master basic grammar and vocabulary of English.

本学では第二外国語としてドイツ語が最も選択の機会を広くしている。同言語系統の英語を深く理解する上でも、また工学の専門上でもドイツ語は今なお最重要な言語の１つである。とくにドイツ語(1)はその出発点を学ぶ処であり少なくとも１度は在学中に受講してその後に備えてほしい。ドイツ語（２）は基本文法の確立発音の慣熟を中心に進め、ドイツ語(3)は、簡単な会話や文章例をできるだけ多彩に学ぶ。ドイツ語（４）はさらにグレードアップし、読み話す練習を中心に行う。

日常生活の様々な場面で使われるフランス語が自然に身に付くような工夫をしながらフランス語を話すことに力点を置きます。（３）ではその他フランス文化についても触れていきます。

スペイン語入門（１）基礎文法から(2) (3)で徐々に知識を深めます。（３）は原則として初級スペイン語を履修していることを前提とします。
イタリア語(1) (2) (3)

イタリア語(1)では易しいテキストを用い基礎的な事項を一つ一つ丁寧にマスターしていくようにプログラムされています。(2)では（１）で学んだ基礎をもとにさらに多くの動詞の変化、その他の語句を積み重ねて会話に入ります。（３）では基礎を再確認しながら使える表現に絞ってまとめていきます。
中国語(1) (2) (3)
中川 友
中国語特有の発声、発音、文字（簡体字）の学習から簡単な会話を読解にいたるまで中国語の様々な局面を初級から学びます。(3)では基礎を復習した上で、会話と語法を中心により高度な内容へ進みます。

秋間 祥巨
自然な音声英語の聴き取りを難しくする音の脱落や音声変化を念頭において、オーディオテープを使用し、ヒアリング能力を伸ばすことを目指す。
科学論文読解ゼミナール

英文の科学論文を教材に基本的文法事項を再確認しながら読解する。
アメリカのマスメディアゼミナール
日高 正司
現代アメリカ社会に焦点をあてる。特にテレビニュースの情報源をもとに社会文化に関する問題について意見交換する。
環境、倫理問題を読む ゼミナール
金澤 洋子
環境、健康、倫理の問題を中心とした英文記事を読み、英語によるpresentation, discussion, summary writing を要求する。授業はすべて英語で行う。
都市と芸術ゼミナール
山西 龍郎
ヨーロッパ都市文化の展開の跡を具体的な都市の中で検証していく。中世、ルネサンスの南西フランス、スペイン、北イタリア諸都市、フランドルからバロック期のローマやドイツ諸都市を中心に辿りたい。
20世紀表象文化論ゼミナール（３）
秋山 義典
現代映画の多角的解読。映画を通じて新たな映画の見方に触れる手がかりを見つける。映像技法、ジャンル、物語、社会、ジェンダーなどの視点から映画を見直す試み。
●イベント
1) TOEIC学内試験とTOEIC特別講習会（年４回）
武蔵工業大学の学生は、年４回、大学でTOEICの試験（IPテスト）を受験することができる。また、試験日のほぼ一週間前に、TOEICの準備講座を開設している。平成１９年度のTOEIC試験日程と申し込み手続き、その他の詳細は別ファイル(Word)を参照のこと。

2) 英語自学自習プログラム（全一年生）
外国語部門では平成１６年度よりCommunication Skills (1)(2)の単位認定の条件として英語リスニング自学自習プログラムを実施している。この語学プログラムは総合的な英語リスニング能力の向上と実践的なコミュニケーション能力を育成するため、学生が自主学習を自ら体験するようにプログラムされている。受講生は自分で立てた計画にしたがい、リスニング自習用指定教材課題（１回５０分を１５回）、各学科指定の前後期どちらかの半期で終了させなければならない。
